Safety in the game of football is an ever growing concern. The game and equipment are being constantly modified to provide as safe of an experience as possible for our student athletes. Below are some of the steps that we are taking as a program to keep this amazing game safe.
- We have at maximum 90 minutes of live play during practice a week. (As per MHSA Guidelines.) Most weeks we are at about 60 min. The rest of the time we are blocking bags or on air drilling proper techniques and safe game play.
- We have adopted and been teaching rugby style tackling for the last 4 years. This style of tackling takes the head contact out of the tackle and focuses on using the near shoulder to the ball carriers near hip. Click HERE to watch a short video on our tackling techniques.
- As per MHSA Guidelines, our athletes are limited to 2 games or 8 quarters in a weekend, to limit the amount of contact our players have.
- The program has purchased Guardian Caps for every athlete in out program to help minimize the risk during practices and camps. For more information on this caps click HERE.
- The concussion protocol at Bozeman High School goes above and beyond current MHSA Standards, with prolonged recovery time and return to play protocols. The protocol is included in all Student Athlete Handbooks.
- The coaches attend several clinics per year, and are constantly being educated on new safety measures and techniques.
- Our helmets are always compliant with current NOCSAE requirements and any that fail are discarded. We have zero helmets that are more than 8 years old.
